Often times, value engineering or design-build approaches to construction allow owners to realize greater value from a given product by streamlining the engineering and construction process. This premise often applies with intermediate/deep foundations and with excavation support structures.

H.B. Fleming has provided design-build services to cutomers for a variety of projects. A steel sheet pile retaining wall was constructed in this situation because the excavation required for construction of a conventional retaining wall would have encroached on an abutting property. This type of retaining wall eliminated the excavation that would have resulted in cutting trees on the abutting property owner's land.

Hardscrabble Rd; Auburn, ME – Proximity to property lines led to the design and installation of this anchored sheet pile wall. Because of the exposed wall height, installation of a conventional retaining wall would have encroached on the abutting property.

 

A.B. Chance helical tieback anchors were augured into the underlying soils and then pre-loaded to prevent deflection of the wall.

A.B. Chance helical anchors work on the principle of passive soil resistance to successive helixes. The torque required to auger the anchor into the soil can be translated to tensile capacity. The ultimate capacity of the anchor can then be verified by load testing.
Helical anchors derive capacity based on the principle of cumulative passive soil resistance applied to successive helices. The torque required to advance the anchor into the soil can be correlated to bearing capacity or pullout resistance. The capacity of the anchor is then verified by load testing individual anchors.
