Installation of temporary excavation support and pipe piles for 3 bridges on Route 107
Scope of Work
- Installation of approximately 45,000 SF of temporary steel sheetpile with internal framing to support excavation depths up to 19′ at 12 locations.
- Installation of approximately 24,500 linear feet of 14″ diameter pipe pile.
- Installation of approximately 9,700 linear feet of 16″ diameter pipe pile.
The Rt. 107 project consisted of the replacement of three bridges and associated roadwork for the Massachusetts Highway Department. H.B. Fleming was hired by The Middlesex Corporation as a subcontractor to install six temporary cofferdams and both 14” and 16” pipe piles for proposed abutments and piers at the bridges. This was a $4,000,000 project for H.B. Fleming.
This was a two phase project and required a temporary cofferdam approximately 45’ long and 18’ wide for each phase at each abutment location. The cofferdams were internally braced and were designed to support excavation and water depths of up to 19’. Once the cofferdams were installed and excavated, H.B. Fleming installed 85’ long 0.375” wall x 14” diameter pipe piles to support the proposed abutments. In addition, Fleming installed 110’ long 0.5” wall x 16” diameter pipe piles for two proposed piers at one bridge location.
In total, we installed approximately 495 tons of steel sheet piles for the temporary cofferdams, 24,500 linear feet of 14” diameter pipe pile and 9,700 linear feet of 16” pipe pile.
