Location: York, Maine
Project Description: H.B. Fleming is constructing 28 rock-socketed, drilled-shaft foundations to support the new toll gantries and overhead signage.
Challenge: The project requires drilling hard rock at multiple locations in multiple phases.
Solution: To minimize drilling durations at each location and optimize the time spent moving from location to location, we’re utilizing a highly skilled crew, large diameter rotary pneumatic drill tooling, and sectional casing. With sectional casing, we’re able to more effectively manage variable rock depths and key the casing into rock, which helps maintain hole stability at the soil/rock interface and prevents water infiltration into the drilled socket. Using a cluster drill (instead of conventional rotary drill tooling) to complete the rock sockets allows us to drill each socket in a matter of hours as opposed to days. The work is validated by CSL testing at each shaft to ensure concrete integrity.
