PILE DRIVING

H.B. Fleming drives steel and timber bearing pile for a variety of structures. These structures include buildings, bridges, dams, wastewater treatment facilities and private residences.

H.B. Fleming has adopted the motto of the Pile Driving Contractor's Association - "Driven Piles are Tested Piles".

The Pile Driving Contractor Association is an association of pile drivers, equipment manufacturers, engineers, and material suppliers interested in the advancement of the driven pile as an economical and reliable deep foundation. The association provides technical support for anyone who is investigating deep foundation alternatives. You can visit PDCA at www.piledrivers.org.

Recently in our attempts to adopt new technology we actually have taken a step backwards in deep foundation techniques. Our industry has replaced caissons and other drilled shaft techniques with driven piles in applications where driven piles could provide a more economical and reliable foundation. The dynamic pile driving analyzer, which is currently being used by several independent engineering firms and the NH DOT, can measure the energy being delivered to a pile by the pile driving equipment. The analyzer can also measure the stress that the pile is experiencing while the energy is being delivered. Using the pile driving analyzer to test pile at the start of a project, we can accurately determine the capacity of a pile by correlating energy delivered to the pile to bearing capacity. We can also preclude any damage to the pile because the analyzer has told us the level of stress the pile is experiencing at any given amount of energy being delivered to the pile. The dynamic analyzer can give us technically reliable data on the capacity of a pile as well as the pile's ability to withstand driving stresses.

From the information derived from the pile driving analyzer, we are essentially testing every pile driven on the project. Hence; the motto of the Pile Driving Contractor's Association - "Driven Piles are Tested Piles". To learn more about dynamic load testing, visit the web site of GZA, Inc. at www.gza.com.

This picture illustrates a 200 ton static pile load test used to verify the capacity of a steel pile. Complete instrumentation in accordance with ASTM D1143 is provided.

We also use dynamic pile testing in most pile testing applications. Dynamic testing provides a quicker, more economical, and in most cases, a technically equivalent alternative to static load testing.

H.B. Fleming has made major contributions to providing long pile for bridge foundations in Maine, Massachusetts & New Hampshire. These pictures show Fleming driving pile for two separate bridges over the Maine Turnpike. Bearing capacities for bridge pile can be as high as 200 ton.

H.B. Fleming drives pile for a major retailer's store. Many retail stores in New England stand on pile driven by H.B. Fleming.

H.B. Fleming is the only company in northern New England consistently using fixed leads. These leads are pinned to the crane at two points offering greater stability and pile driving accuracy.

LOW HEAD ROOM PILE DRIVING

In many cases when an existing building is renovated for a changed use, the foundation is determined to be inadequate. H.B. Fleming has the capability to drive pile inside existing buildings with as little as 13 feet of overhead clearance.

This picture shows H.B. Fleming driving and splicing 10 foot long sections of pile inside a retail building in South Portland, Maine.
